Exclusionist
To begin, each of my family members declare marriage a necessity when defining a family. In this sense, each of my family members would be most in line with the exclusionist theme discussed in lecture.
Moderate
However, my mother and older brother claimed that children are necessary in a family, which would make them in line with moderate ideals.
Inclusionist
On the contrary, my twin brother (Saral) and my father agree that a family does not need to have children to be considered a family.
Familial Split
Although clear distinctions exist in ours and our parents’ perspectives on family structure and definition, my family seems to be split in half when choosing a definition of family. My mother claims that
“a complete family needs kids”,
Mom
while Saral claims that
“[you] don’t necessarily need kids to be a family”.
Saral
These contrasting definitions of family are interesting to say the least, particularly because there is no clear reason for the differing definitions. It is apparent that the differences in my family members’ definitions of family are not due to generational differences.
