Gender & Work

Me and Saral in 1998. The way we were raised is the best example of how our gender affected how my parents chose to raise us because we were raised side-by-side.

Shared Opinions

Protection

One opinion that all four of my family members shared is that females should be more protected than males during their upbringing. Because all of them agree on this ideal, my parents had slightly stricter rules for me than my twin brother while growing up. This relates to the concept of gender norms in the form of language. Even today, my parents speak about me in a more delicate and protective nature than they do of my twin brother.

Glass Ceiling

Another opinion that they all share is that gender should not affect one’s ability to pursue one’s dreams and aim for success, and that all women should aim to break the glass ceiling as early as possible. When my mother decided to go to nursing school, she had a very rough time transitioning.

“My whole family didn’t talk to my for a year. I had to live with the one sister who would actually speak to me”.

Mom

Because my mother decided to pursue a graduate degree rather than agree to be a housewife for her entire life, her family decided to shun her. Because of the obstacles my mother’s gender created for her, she and my father have made sure to raise me to be as confident and determined as possible.
