Homogamy & Filter Theory

Mom & Dad at their wedding on June 23, 1989. This image represents their homogamous marriage and wedding ceremony because of the traditional Hindu garments worn. It is very likely that mine and my brothers’ wedding pictures will differ in what types of garments are worn.

Along with meeting someone with a similar career path, my parents knew that they wanted to marry someone of the same religion, which narrowed down their pool even more. This idea relates to the concept of filter theory discussed in class. Because my parents had much stricter standards on who they wanted to marry, they had to begin filtering at much earlier stages than my brothers and I will have to. In my mother’s words,

“I never even thought about marrying someone who was not Indian and Hindu. It was all I had ever known”.
