Despite the many differences that exist generationally, we still have some things in common with our parents. For example, the pressures placed on us to have a family are quite similar to the ones ur parents faced. In fact, because of the larger dating pool my brothers and I are dealing with, we might even feel more pressure to find a partner and start a family.
Homogamy
As discussed in lecture, my parents are a homogamous couple, meaning they are of the same race, religion, and education level. While my brothers and I hope to marry people of the same education level, I predict that our marriages will be heterogamous in terms of most other characteristics.
Values
Furthermore, our parents have instilled the same exact values in us that their parents instilled in them. When asking my parents about the values instilled in them and the ones they instilled in us, they had identical answers:
“Stay loyal to family, respect each other, love each other, help our kids fulfill their dreams”.
Mom & Dad
My parents came to America to give their children a better life with endless opportunities, and that meant spending much more time grooming us to get into college than their parents ever did. Although this may be a generational difference, the value behind it remains identical. When reflecting on my own upbringing and the values I have been taught, I notice that these are identical to the ones my parents were raised with. Therefore, it is clear that certain aspects of family life stick with us no matter circumstance or environment.
